Retirement is something you’ve spent your entire life working towards. The choice of were to retire is a major decision. Maybe you’re looking for a warm, sunny climate. Or maybe you just want a place where the crime and cost of living are low that’s close to your children.

If you’re planning to move after retirement, we’ve curated a list, in no particular order, of the top retirement destinations for this year. This ranking factors in affordability, crime rate, walkability, qualify of life, and climate.

Our list consists of destinations all over the country, with different climates and demographics.

  1. 1. Carlsbad, California - This upscale beach town is just 35 miles north of San Diego and is a retiree’s paradise. With a warm, sunny, Mediterranean climate, Carlsbad has both a booming tourism industry, and large retiree population.

    2. If you choose to live in a retirement community, there are many to choose from. The city also has a low crime rate, making it a great place for nighttime and outdoor activities.

    Carlsbad is also a recreation hub, known for its spas, museums, golf courses, and beaches.

  2. 2. Asheville, North Carolina - Located in the Blue Ridge Mountains, this retirement haven offers both mild weather, and scenic vistas.

    3. There is a wealth of cultural attractions. From the Asheville Community Theater, the Flood Fine Arts Center, to the outdoor music festivals, to the cultural amenities of UNC-Asheville, there’s something for everyone.

    Asheville also offers relatively affordable housing, as well as an abundance of fellow retirees.

  3. 3. Austin, Texas - Texas’s capital city is an affordable cultural hub with mild winters, making it a great place for retirees. If art and culture is your thing, Austin is the place to be. It has an abundance of museums, theaters, and it’s the live music capital of the world.

    4. Unlike some popular retirement spots, it also has a strong economy thanks to the presence of tech companies like Dell, the University of Texas, and the state capital.

  4. 4. Colorado Springs, Colorado - Situated in the Rocky Mountains, Colorado’s second largest city has a cost of living equivalent to the national average and unbelievable views.

    5. It also has a wealth of outdoor activities, such as the Garden of Gods Park, hiking trails, and many scenic overlooks.

    Colorado Springs is the perfect location for the retiree seeking outdoor adventures with incredible scenery.

  5. 5. Sarasota, Florida -This wouldn’t be a list of retirement destinations without a Florida city. Sarasota has much more to offer than just a warm, sunny climate.

    6. Its vibrant golf courses, beaches, parks, botanical gardens, the Ringling Museum of Art, and nationally known restaurants also attracts seniors.

    Sarasota’s cost of living and home prices are also not much higher than the national average, so you have the ability to live comfortably with the view of luxurious beaches and a warm climate. There’s a reason so many retirees choose Florida.
